A Slow Thaw

The bitter cold of winter seems to continue to hold sway over the men of France.  Again the ponts were cold with one single exception, Chevalier Governor Luc de Canard-Jaune and M. Theirry Arrviste.  Both, while fairly quiet about the remarks made last month found it necessary to abide honour and show up at the appointed time and place to settle the dispute.  It was quickly obvious that Monsieur Arriviste held the advantage being a much healthier and stronger man, once the rapiers started in movement, the advantage was less clear as Sir de Canard-Jaune clearly showed his colours are not so easily struck.

From the first it was clear the the Chevalier knew that a stronger opponent often found difficulty with a strong defense.  The first lunge by Arriviste was a clear miss but the le Canard-Jaune parry would have sent it errant if the lunge had been more accurate.  The follow up lunge by le Canard-Jaune was not errant and found its mark for first blood.  The next series from each failed to land a point with Arriviste's cut meeting only air and le Canard-Jaune's slash cleaving nought but the wind.  However, as each made a slash next, it was the Chevalier that greeted flesh and M. Arriviste that did not.  The damage was slight to a man of Arriviste's stature and he focused on the goal.   Returning to the lunge he found the meat of sir le Canard-Jaune, but found his opponent had too found a place for his blade to cut.  Monieur Theirry Arriviste concluded offering his surrender with a gracious bow and apologizing that the drink had taken him such for certainly the mother of one such skilled and mannered could not have worn such boots as he had described.  And it seems that the pair found this satisfactory as they were seen later in the month sharing a drink at Monsieur de Tainquengin's ball.
