Le Interview avec le Compte d'Avignon, Robespierre O'Rielly

Le Compte d'Avignon, Major Robespierre O'Rielly

I had the wonderful luck to find Le Compte d'Avignon, Major Robespierre O'Rielly of the Dragoon Guard was able to make time to sit down and have a drink with me at Bothwell's.  I found him to be a kind and well-humoured man with a definite wit.  I am sure the the Compte will find good fortune in front of him as he leads the Dragoon Guard and as he heads up his home of Avignon.

The text of the interview follows.

JAD: Thank you Compte O’Reilly for taking the time to meet with me.

ROR: Please, call me Pierre.

JAD: Thank you. Since you have arrived in Paris there has been quite a bit of interest in your background. Before anyone was even aware you were here, you had arranged for a Majority in the Dragoon Guards and courted the lovely Julienne. Could you tell our readers something about your past?

ROR: Not all that much to tell. I grew up in Avignon and became the Compte when my dear father passed away two months ago.

JAD: One thing that has people fascinated is your family name. How did someone with the surname of O’Reilly become a Compte in France?

ROR: (laughing) you are not the first to comment on that. My father was an one of those Irish Geese who fled Protestant England’s rule and landed in Catholic countries.

JAD: But how did he earn the title you now hold?

ROR: The same way any other commom man does, through many acts of bravery in the armies of France. My father fought in many wars in the cavalry. Some of those he mentioned were the Battle of Coutras in 1587, the Capture of Paris in 1588 and the Battle of Jury in 1590.

JAD: Most commendable. Have you joined the cavalry in honor of your father?

ROR: Yes I did. He commanded the Dragoon Guards at one time and I hope to emulate his fine record.

JAD: But why Avignon as his lands? Wouldn’t a province closer to Ireland make more sense?

ROR: While I will always love Ireland because of my father’s stories, I have never been there and France is my country. As to why Avignon, the area was ruled mostly by Protestants. After the last battle where many Protestant leaders perished, the King invited my father to take over the lands there to bring Catholic rule and hopefully quell the provinces people.

JAD: And has this worked?

ROR: It didn’t at the beginning as the people distrusted anyone Catholic. But my father proved to be a fair man and treated everyone equally under the law. After a few years, the people came to love my father and many mourned his passing.

JAD: Do you plan on continuing this treatment?

ROR: Of course! Not only is it the best way, it is the law of the land since Henri III signed the treaties.

JAD: Lets move to the present. What do you see for yourself in the near future?

ROR: I hope to rise in the military ranks and hopefully become a General within the year.

JAD: (laughing) Not very humble in your goals.

ROR: Why is humility treasured over honesty? I have been trained in the arts of war. And sitting at my fathers side as he reminisced, I learned much about tactics. Why not use these for the betterment of France?

JAD: And for the betterment of yourself?

ROR: Certainly! Why shouldn’t I have a little glory for myself?

JAD: And what are your thoughts on Julienne?

ROR: Ah, now there is a fine beauty! She has it all: beauty, family money and many contacts at court.

JAD: Do you see here as a possible Comptessa?

ROR: (Laughing) Please give us a chance to get to know each other! We have barely begun and we both want to be sure we are compatable. Now I must unfortunately close this interview as I have other appointments.

JAD: Thank you Compte O’Reilly for your time.
