At the Kings Court Positions Appointed Le Party Scene Les Femmes Bonnes Military Matters Religious Affaires Crossed Blades Comings and Goings & Le Interview avec le Compte d'Avignon, Robespierre O'Rielly A Troubled Tuscan Winter I would have scarcely thought it possible, but then I am no military man. Our troops that had volunteered for the Tuscan front in the last two months have returned to Paris and under such a crushing blow. A blow so devastating that the military courts are going to decide the fate of two of the commanders that lead the operation, the field army commander and the commander of the Royal North Highlanders. It was of some great disbelief to all around these officers that the orders were given to place them in such jeopardy in such a simple military skirmish. Still, the result was unmistakeable in that almost the entire French army was driven from the field with the celebrated Royal North Highlanders leading the way. Some regiments faired better than the army as a whole and certainly better than the Highlanders. The 3rd Company of the Royal Foot Guard commanded by Major Justin le Fey arrived in time to hold ground and give support the 6th battalion of the 69th Arquebusiers. It was in fact the 69th under the command of Captain Algernon Montcrief that saved the skirmish from being a total wash. I wasn't at court but I heard that a missive came in, a dispatch from the Army commander that did nothing but praise how Captain Montcrief held his ground and drove back the much larger brigade that was bearing down on the rest of the army with a brilliant flanking maneuver to catch them completely unaware from their nine and drive them from the field. Major le Fey's Foot Guard was able to hold ground and allow the Royal North Highlanders safe passage from the field of battle due to Captain Montgrief's strong and bold advance. I am sure we will hear more from this man. A Return to Tuscany Due to this blow, it has been decided that France needs to keep a show of force in Tuscany. The spriong campaign will keep the frontier regiments and Royal North Highlanders there trying to repair the damage with yet more field operations. The Summer Campaign will follow in Tuscany from whence Major le Fey of the Royal Foot Guard has returned. The North Highlanders and Frontier Regiments will remain in Tuscany through the campaign this summer. Then they will be joined by the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Foot Brigades will join them along with the Dragoon Guard. The recent events of the winter season in Tuscany has decided the Ministers to continue in that arena for the next six months and then, depending on how Tuscany fairs, they will decide in June whether to continue after the summer. The Field Marshall has selected General Bice to head the Field Army. Regimental Restructuring The King has approved of a plan by the Minister of War to increase the number of regiments. According to what I can gleam of their plan, the Royal Dragoons will become a brigade all to their own by splitting their officers to create the Paris Light Dragoon regiment. The two regiments will comprise the Dragoon Brigade. To replace the Royal Dragoons in the Heavy Brigade, they propose to split the Crown Prince Cuirassiers into an accompanying regiment, the Royal Cuirassiers. Additionally, they wish to create a fourth foot regiment. The 13th Fusiliers are being called up from the frontier regiments to take the 27th Musketeers in the 2nd Foot Brigade. The 27th Musketeers will become part of the 3rd Foot Brigade along with the 4th Arquebusiers who are also being called in from the frontier regiments. The current 3rd Foot Brigade comprising of the 69th Arquebusiers and the Gascon Regiment will comprise the 4th Foot Brigade. The suggestion was made to put the new structure in place for the summer campaign, but Chevalier Luc le Canard-Jaune quickly pointed out that such a change would cause difficulties in the ranks. Officers who had earned the respect of their men would be commanding soldiers not well known to them. He also pointed out that the time necessary to drill them was short and with the upcoming campaign mere months away, the force would be weakened and disorganized. At Lord le Canard-Jaune's suggestion, the changes will take place in September when the army returns from Tuscany. Men of Sterner Stuff Just before the announcement of the summer campaign, a number of officers resigned their commissions making way for others to move up the line. Next month, no doubt that when the promotions are granted for regiments that these positions will be filled by men able to manage the Tuscans. Among those retiring where the Brigade Major for the 1st Foot Brigade. No doubt with his term at an end he felt it a good place to tender his resignation and return to private life. The Captain of the King's escort also removed himself leaving a vacancy in that very important position. King Henri, I am sure, will be very keen on getting the right man for that position. A certain major in the Cardinal's Guard was overheard rumbling about it being suggested that he leave his post, but he defiantly refused saying that His Eminence needed men that would not crumble so easily in the face of unwanted influence. January we had a good number of men join the ranks of the regiments with quite a few new officers showing up from the provinces. February proved it was a month for lovers (though that too seemed weak) and not for fighters. Still, one man continues to try and he seems like the Major of the Cardinal's Guard to be a man not willing to cave in when everything says no. Jose Negron found himself again denied admittance to the Crown Prince Cuirassiers. However, Monsieur Negron has not let this lie as he spent the remainder of the month at the Military Academy. What they do not esteem, he is determined yet to provide. |
